HISTORY

From Mill Creek to Modern Dexter

Dexter’s story dates to the 1820s, when Judge Samuel W. Dexter purchased land in the area and established the settlement that would take his name. Its location along Mill Creek helped support early development, and the arrival of the railroad strengthened Dexter’s connection to the surrounding region.

Over time, the community grew around a compact downtown that still reflects much of Dexter’s historic character. Today, historic buildings and long-established neighborhoods sit alongside newer development, while Mill Creek remains a defining feature of the community. The transformation of the former mill pond area into Mill Creek Park has also created a direct connection between Dexter’s history, downtown and modern trail system.
