Small-city character with deep Washtenaw County roots.

Saline is a small city in southern Washtenaw County centered around a historic downtown at Michigan Avenue and Ann Arbor Street. The community combines established neighborhoods and newer residential areas with local shops and restaurants, city parks, recreation along the Saline River and convenient access to Ann Arbor and the broader Southeast Michigan region.

Saline has grown around a recognizable center: its historic downtown at Michigan Avenue and Ann Arbor Street. Restaurants, shops and community destinations are concentrated around downtown, while residential neighborhoods extend outward into different parts of the city and surrounding Saline area.

For buyers, that creates a range of settings—from older homes and established streets closer to downtown to subdivisions, condominium communities, newer construction and properties outside the city with more land. From historic homes to newer Saline communities

Saline's housing reflects the different stages of the community's growth. Closer to downtown, buyers can find older homes on established streets, including houses dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Moving outward from the city center, the housing mix expands to include mid- and late-20th-century subdivisions, condominium communities and newer residential developments. A Saline home search can also extend well beyond the city limits. Properties in the surrounding townships may have a Saline mailing address while offering larger lots, rural surroundings, newer subdivisions or custom homes. Because a Saline address can encompass several municipalities, buyers should consider the property's actual jurisdiction, taxes and services—not simply the mailing address—when comparing homes.

HISTORY

From salt springs to the Chicago Road

Saline's history is closely tied to the landscape and transportation routes that shaped early Washtenaw County. Salt springs near the Saline River were known long before European settlement and helped give the river—and eventually the community—its name. The area also sat along an established trail between Detroit and Chicago that later became the route of the Chicago Road and today's Michigan Avenue.

Surveyor Orange Risdon came through the area while working on the military road between Detroit and Chicago and purchased land near the Saline River. He later founded the permanent village of Saline in 1832. Its location along the road helped Saline develop as a stage stop and local center for mills, workshops, commerce and the surrounding agricultural community.

Transportation continued to shape Saline as it grew. Railroad service arrived in 1870, improving connections for local farmers and merchants and helping Saline become an important agricultural shipping point in southeastern Michigan during the late 19th century. Traces of that history remain visible today in Saline's historic buildings, street pattern and preserved railroad depot.
