A historic city with a character all its own.

Ypsilanti is a historic Washtenaw County city east of Ann Arbor, home to Eastern Michigan University, Downtown Ypsilanti and Depot Town. HISTORY

A city shaped by transportation, industry and the Huron River

Ypsilanti's history is closely tied to transportation, industry and the Huron River. Rail, automotive development and other industries played important roles in the city's growth, while many surviving buildings and neighborhoods reflect different periods of that history.

The river has also played a particularly interesting role in Ypsilanti's development. In 1913, the Olmsted Brothers were commissioned to advise the city on its growth and advocated creating public green space and pathways along the Huron River. Elements of that vision were implemented and remain visible in Ypsilanti's riverfront park system today.
