EXPLORE ANN ARBOR HOMES →At the center of Washtenaw County
Ann Arbor is centrally located in Washtenaw County, with I-94, US-23 and M-14 providing connections throughout Southeast Michigan. Downtown, the University of Michigan, major employment centers and residential neighborhoods are distributed across the city, making location within Ann Arbor an important part of comparing homes.
The city also serves as a hub for the surrounding communities of Ypsilanti, Saline, Dexter and Chelsea. For buyers, understanding the relationship between a neighborhood, major roads, downtown, university destinations and everyday amenities can be just as important as the home itself.
More Than a Market. A Lifestyle.
Ann Arbor combines the amenities of a larger city with the distinct character of its individual neighborhoods and districts. Downtown brings together locally owned restaurants and shops, arts and entertainment venues, galleries, bookstores and community destinations, while the University of Michigan adds another layer of cultural, academic and athletic activity throughout the city.
Different parts of Ann Arbor offer their own everyday experience. Main Street, Kerrytown, the State Street area and South University each have a different mix of dining, shopping and entertainment, while neighborhood commercial areas provide convenient destinations closer to home. That variety is one reason location within Ann Arbor can matter as much as the city itself when choosing where to live.

Shopping & Local BusinessThe Huron River, parks and trails woven through the city
Outdoor recreation is an important part of Ann Arbor’s character. The Huron River winds through the city and connects a series of parks and natural areas, creating opportunities for paddling, fishing, walking, biking and spending time along the water. The Border-to-Border Trail follows portions of the river corridor and connects Ann Arbor with the broader Washtenaw County trail network.
Ann Arbor also maintains an extensive system of neighborhood parks, larger recreation areas and natural spaces. Gallup Park and Argo Park are closely connected to the Huron River, while destinations such as Nichols Arboretum, Bird Hills Nature Area and the Matthaei Botanical Gardens add very different outdoor experiences throughout and around the city.
From a frontier settlement to a university city
Ann Arbor was founded in 1824 by John Allen and Elisha Rumsey, who purchased land along the Huron River and established a new settlement. The community was named Ann Arbor in reference to their wives—both named Ann—and the natural landscape of the area. Ann Arbor became the seat of Washtenaw County soon afterward, helping establish its importance within the growing region.
A defining moment came in 1837, when the University of Michigan moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor. The university's presence became increasingly intertwined with the city's development, influencing its economy, architecture, culture and growth while attracting people from across Michigan and beyond.
Ann Arbor continued to expand around its downtown, university campus and surrounding residential neighborhoods. Today, historic districts, older neighborhoods, civic buildings and the city's street pattern provide visible connections to that history, while the university and Huron River remain two of the forces most closely associated with Ann Arbor's identity.
